Remdesivir

Why is it prescribed?

Remdesivir is used to treat COVID-19 in specific people who are at high risk of serious complications from the virus.

Most common:

  • increase in liver enzymes
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Rash

Contact your healcare provider right away if you experience:

  • an allergic reaction: hives, itching, red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin, wheezing, tightness in the chest of throat, trouble breathing, or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue or throat
  • signs of liver problems: dark urine, decreased appetite, stomach pain, light-colored sttols, throwing up, or yellow skin or eyes

Remdesivir is an antiviral agent that works against the COVID-19 virus by stopping it from multiplying in the body.


Do not use remdesivir if you are allergic to it or to any of the ingredients in the medication.

Do not use if you have serious liver or kidney problems.

Drug Interactions:

  • chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine. These work against the effects of remdesivir
  • theophylline
  • midazolam - take 2 hours after remdesivir

Use in pregnancy: Not yet known how safe this is for use during pregnancy. Discuss risks versus benefits with your healthcare provider. Use effective contraception if on remdesivir. 

Use in breastfeeding: Information on safety is lacking. Discuss use with your healthcare provider
