For Saskatchewan families, a lung transplant can mean hope, healing, and a second chance at life. But along with the physical and emotional challenges of this journey come significant financial pressures. These financial burdens sometimes, can be the reason why someone chooses not to have the life-saving surgery. 

Jim and Marjorie Burnett devoted their lives to improving the health and well-being of others. In honour of their long time volunteer leadership with Lung Saskatchewan and the Lung Foundation of Saskatchewan, the Jim and Marjorie Burnett Bursary was established, ensuring their legacy continues to inspire future lung health professionals.

I’ve always been proud to call the Prairies home. My parents came from humble beginnings, but they were hardworking and proud of what they did. My mom was a care aide, and my dad, a boiler engineer. Their dedication and example stayed with me as I pursued my education and career.

Quitting smoking wasn’t easy for my husband. When he was young, Gord worked at his father’s drug store, where he had easy access to cigarettes. From the store windows, he watched teenaged boys tuck their cigarette packages under their T-shirt sleeves, get into their cars, and squeal down Main Street. He could see himself being that cool. By high school, he was having about ten smokes per week. His cigarette addiction crept into our lives slowly.

I had no idea what COPD was, or how it would change my life.

Luana Hiebert bravely shared her story of radon-induced lung cancer, raising awareness, inspiring action, and helping to protect countless families. In honour of Luana's memory, Lung Saskatchewan has created 'Luana's Legacy Fund' which will focus on supporting those in need of during support during a lung cancer journey, radon mitigation, as well as education and awareness about the dangers of radon.
