This product is manufactured by Sandoz Canada Inc. using the ingredient cefotaxime.

This product is taken via intravenous injection.

Why is it prescribed?

Cefotaxime can be used to treat many different infections.  This information pertains to its use for pneumonia.

  • Cefotaxime is given by injection into a vein (intravenous injection) or into the muscle.
  • It is important to get all doses of this medication to ensure the infection is completely cleared up and doesn't recur.

The dosage of cefotaxime depends on the severity and type of infection and your body weight.


Cefotaxime is a cephalosporin antibiotic.  It kills certain bacteria that can cause infections such as pneumonia.


Side effects include:

  • headache
  • nausea, vomiting
  • rash, itching
  • fever
  • pain and tenderness at injection site
  • lower abdominal pain

Do not use cefotaxime if:

  • If you are allergic to cefotaxime or any cephalosporin antibiotic

Use cefotaxime with caution if you:

  • are allergic to penicillin
  • have colon (large intestine) problems
  • have blood disorders like hemolytic anemia
  • have kidney problems

Drug Interactions: The following may interact with cefotaxime:

  • Probenecid
  • Furosemide
  • Aminoglycosides

 

Safety in pregnancy: Cefotaxime is considered compatible with pregnancy

Safety in breastfeeding: Cefotaxime is considered compatible with breastfeeding.
