Signs and Symptoms

Woman holding chestPeople with long COVID can have many different symptoms. Below are some of the more common long COVID symptoms, however, there have been over 200 different symptoms reported. People may have one, or, many symptoms that can affect many parts of the body. 

Chest and Breathing 

  • Breathlessness – feeling short of breath 
  • Cough – helps you to clear your lungs and throat
  • Chest tightness – when it is difficult to move your chest or take a deep breath 
  • Chest pain – it can hurt anywhere in the chest
  • Palpitations – when you notice your heart beating

Brain

  • Find it difficult to focus 
  • Headache 
  • Problems sleeping
  • Pins and needles or numbness – which feels like a pricking or tingling on the skin 
  • Dizziness – when you feel like you are spinning around or you feel like you may faint 
  • Delirium – when you are unable to concentrate or think clearly, feeling confused or disorientated
  • Memory problems 
  • Many of these symptoms are often referred to as brain fog

Stomach

  • Stomach pain or ache 
  • Nausea – feeling like you will be sick 
  • Diarrhoea – loose and watery stool and needing to go to the bathroom more often due to more frequent bowel movements 
  • Not feeling hungry 
  • Weight loss 

Muscle and Bone

  • Joint and muscle pain

Mental Health and Mood

  • Feeling depressed 
  • Feeling worried 
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Ear, Nose and Throat

  • Tinnitus – a ringing in the ears
  • Earache
  • Sore throat 
  • Loss of taste and smell 

Skin

  • Skin rashes 

Other Symptoms

  • Fatigue –  when you feel tired all the time
  • Fever – when your skin feels hot to the touch 
  • Pain – when a part of your body hurts
  • Changes in menstrual cycle or periods 

Symptoms in Children

The current research identifies that the most common long COVID symptoms in children include: 

  • Child FatiguedFatigue –  when you feel tired all the time 
  • Breathlessness – when you feel shortness of breath 
  • Delirium – when you are unable to concentrate or think clearly, feeling confused or disorientated. This may also be referred to as brain fog.
  • Headaches – when you have pain in your head 
  • Stomach pain – when you have pain in your abdomen 
  • Muscle aches and pains or joint pains – When your muscles or joints hurt 
  • Sleep problems – When your sleep pattern is disturbed or you have trouble sleeping
