Smoke-Free Generation

Let's Build a Smoke-Free Generation

Submitted by orufai on 19 October 2026

Lung Saskatchewan is joining organizations across Canada through the National Lung Health Alliance (NLHA) to advance a Smoke-Free Generation, a long-term public health vision to protect future generations from tobacco, vaping and nicotine addiction.

The proposed policy would gradually raise the legal age to purchase tobacco products, meaning future generations would never be able to legally purchase these products. The goal is to prevent young people from becoming addicted, while respecting adults who legally use nicotine products today.

There is strong public support for this approach. NLHA polling found that:

  • 76% of Canadians support stopping tobacco and vape sales to people born in 2009 or later.

  • 89% favour stronger rules to keep nicotine products away from youth.

  • 96% say preventing children from ever taking up smoking or vaping is important.

  • 8 in 10 Canadians aged 18–29 support a Smoke-Free Generation law.
