Youth Make Impact With Purchase Age Increase Announcement

Submitted by sdriedger on 30 October 2023

Lung Saskatchewan would like to thank the Government of Saskatchewan for protecting Saskatchewan kids by committing to increasing the purchase age of tobacco and vape products from 18 to 19 years. Prior to this intention to increase the purchase age, Saskatchewan was the only province in Canada that had a lower minimum age for the legal purchase of commercial tobacco and vaping products (18 years) than for alcohol and cannabis products (19 years).

Working with youth from across Saskatchewan through Youth4Change, we jointly advocated to the government for this age increase. We believe this measure will help protect youth, and help schools better deal with products and usage on their premises.

The dramatic rise in youth vaping requires swift action to prevent even more Saskatchewan youth from becoming addicted to nicotine. Saskatchewan has one of the highest rates of youth smoking and vaping in the country, and we look forward to this positive step in strengthening regulations around tobacco and vaping products.
