Your Decision CAN Make a Difference for a child with ASTHMA!

Submitted by bjohnston on 18 August 2015

My child just has a touch of asthma is a familiar phrase that is heard by the Certified Respiratory Educators at The Lung Association,” says Brian Graham, President & CEO. “The truth of the matter is that asthma is a common but serious lung disease.

In Saskatchewan 100,000 of our residents have their breath taken away because they have asthma and that includes 35,000 children.  “Asthma is a leading cause of hospital admissions among children and also one of the leading causes of school absences.   In the adult population uncontrolled asthma affects workplace productivity and costly sick leave,” he adds.

Mike and Sheri Olain are The Lung Association’s Stamp Out Asthma Raffle ambassadors.  They contacted The Lung Association because they tragically lost their wonderful son, Emerson, in December 2013 from an asthma attack.  Emerson would have turned three that January.  “By sharing Emerson’s story we are hoping that some good can come out of our terrible loss and that it never happens to any other child,” say Mike & Sheri.  “We feel that had we been better educated that Emerson might still be here today.  Sheri and I urge you to take asthma seriously and contact the Certified Respiratory Educators at The Lung Association in order to become fully informed about asthma.  They are available during office hours to answer your questions about asthma and to help you access the respiratory care services in your area.  Please call them! Their toll-free lung health line is 1-888-566-LUNG.”

Asthma is a chronic lung disease which can result in breathing problems such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, or tightness in the chest.  Asthma can develop at any age but is most common in children.  Approximately 60% of people with asthma between the ages of 18 – 54 do not have optimal control.  This leaves them open to frightening and sometimes life-threatening attacks!  Education and medication are currently our best tools for managing asthma while our researchers work diligently for a cure.  That is why your support of the 2015 Stamp Out Asthma Raffle is so important.
