Discovery Asthma Camp Receives $64,500 From ACT/UCT Regina

Submitted by bjohnston on 20 July 2005

Discovery Asthma Camp, an educational camp for children with asthma, annually receives support from all seven ACT/UCT Clubs in Saskatchewan. The Clubs are located in Regina, Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, North Battleford, Prince Albert, Yorkton, and Swift Current.

This year, in addition to the annual Camp contribution of $9,500 by the Regina ACT/UCT and Auxiliary, a special dispensation of $55,000 was awarded. In the 1950's, a fund was established to help ACT members and their families who had experienced personal hardships, such as loss of employment or health. In January 2005, the ACT/UCT Regina Council voted to dispense these funds to the Discovery Asthma Camp.

Discovery Asthma Camp, sponsored by both the Lung Association of Saskatchewan and ACT/UCT Clubs, offers their camp so that children ages 7-13 with a diagnosis of asthma can enjoy the experience of summer camp, in a safe setting made for fun and learning. This Camp has been in existence for 17 years and provides Around the Clock Care from a medical team comprised of a physician, nurses, physiotherapists, a pharmacist, respiratory therapist and dietician. The health care community has recognized the high quality of the medical component of the Camp both nationally and internationally.

"It is the generosity of our sponsors that makes Discovery Asthma Camp viable", states Jan Haffner, Camp Director. "This generous donation will help ensure that we can continue to provide this educational experience for our Saskatchewan children with asthma".

In a recent study in Saskatchewan, 16 - 21% of children have asthma. Campers from all over Saskatchewan attend this medically based camp. This year the Discovery Asthma Camp for Kids was held July 5 - 9 at Hitchcock's Hideaway, situated along the shores of Lake Diefenbaker
