Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that mainly affects the digestive system and the lungs. In the lungs, the production of thick mucus blocks the airways, creating lung damage and making it hard to breathe.

CF is a life-threatening condition, and is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. Thanks to advances in treatment and care, the average life expectancy has been steadily increasing and quality of life has improved.
