Treatment and Prevention
Treatment
There’s no cure for measles. Treatment includes:
-
Drinking plenty of fluids
-
Using medicine like acetaminophen (Tylenol) to lower fever
-
Treating infections if they happen
-
Some children may need vitamin A, which can help prevent severe illness
-
Going to the hospital if symptoms are serious
Prevention
The best way to prevent measles is to get vaccinated.
The MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, and rubella) is:
-
93% effective after 1 dose
-
97% effective after 2 doses
In Canada, children usually get the MMR vaccine at:
-
12 to 15 months old
-
18 months or between 4 and 6 years old (depending on where one lives)
Other ways to prevent measles:
-
Ensure everyone in the home is vaccinated
-
Stay home if unwell
-
Wash your hands often
-
Keep anyone with measles away from others to stop the spread
