Treatment and Prevention

Treatment

There’s no cure for measles. Treatment includes:

  • Drinking plenty of fluids

  • Using medicine like acetaminophen (Tylenol) to lower fever

  • Treating infections if they happen

  • Some children may need vitamin A, which can help prevent severe illness

  • Going to the hospital if symptoms are serious

Prevention

The best way to prevent measles is to get vaccinated.

The MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, and rubella) is:

  • 93% effective after 1 dose

  • 97% effective after 2 doses

In Canada, children usually get the MMR vaccine at:

  • 12 to 15 months old

  • 18 months or between 4 and 6 years old (depending on where one lives)

Other ways to prevent measles:

  • Ensure everyone in the home is vaccinated

  • Stay home if unwell

  • Wash your hands often

  • Keep anyone with measles away from others to stop the spread
