The RESPTREC Webinar series continues on June 20th with the webinar, An Update on Allergy and Asthma. Dr. Harold Kim will join us to for a brief discussion on immunodeficiency, rhinitis, asthma, and hives.

Our commitment to Indigenous health continues with the second webinar in our series, Miyo-mahcihoyān: Ohpana - An Indigenous Perspective on Health and Lung Care. On Wednesday, June 28th, we will be honored to host Dr. Veronica McKinney, who will explore the importance of Indigenous perspectives in healthcare.

We have some exciting opportunities at Lung Saskatchewan! We are searching for a passionate Research Coordinator to join our team, as well as a motivated volunteer to assume the role of Treasurer on our Board of Directors. More details on these positions and how to apply can be found below!

Last month, our Youth4Change group and health partners stormed the Saskatchewan Legislature to advocate for regulatory measures to protect youth from commercial tobacco and vaping products. The group provided eight recommendations for the government to reduce the impact of tobacco and vaping use on our healthcare system, economy, and our people.

Congratulations to the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation (SHRF) 2022-2023 Solutions Program grant recipients, whose invaluable contributions to research, including lung health research, will make a significant difference in our province. Supporting research is an important part of Lung Saskatchewan’s mission and we are pleased to be a funding partner on the Solutions Program.

Our highly anticipated 2023 Inspired Breathing Conference ran successfully from June 6 - 8. The conference provided a platform for health professionals from across Canada to interact and learn virtually. Thank you to our sponsors and delegates for participating in this year’s conference. Dr. Harold Kim joins deliver an update on allergy and asthma. This webinar will include a brief discussion on immunodeficiency, rhinitis, asthma and hives.

Dr. Harold Kim has been practicing as an allergist in Kitchener, Ontario for 23 years. His clinical interests include allergic conditions including asthma, biologics therapy, allergic rhinitis and food allergy.

Perspectives in Indigenous Care in Health Webinar

Miyo-mahcihoyān: Ohpana - An Indigenous Perspective on Health and Lung Care

Wednesday, June 28th at 12 PM (CST)

Dr. Veronica McKinney will guide us through the impact of history, culture, and colonialism on the current lung disease experienced by Indigenous people as well as explore ways to incorporate Indigenous perspectives into the care and treatment of lung diseases, particularly in relation to respiratory health.

We look forward to learning from Dr. McKinney's expertise and gain a deeper understanding of Indigenous perspectives in healthcare.

"When I started working at Lung Saskatchewan it was the first time in my life, I felt like I could be open about my lung disease from the get-go. In past workplaces, I was always cautious about how much I shared, as employers don’t want to hear you will be off sick. I have always had to “hoard” my sick days and hope I had enough to make it through the year.

But the absolute best part of working at Lung Saskatchewan has been meeting so many other Saskatchewan people with lung disease. I am so proud to work for an organization that advocates for people like me."

Research Coordinator

Lung Saskatchewan is hiring a Research Coordinator to work on an exciting project aimed at maintaining the knowledge sharing platform for the Care and History of Indigenous Peoples: Residential Schools and Sanatoria Information Sharing Project. If you're passionate about community engagement and digitizing historical information, this could be the perfect opportunity for you!

The position is part-time (12-15 hours per week) for 24 weeks with possibility of extension.

Treasurer

Lung Saskatchewan is currently seeking a volunteer to join its dynamic provincial Board of Directors in the role of Treasurer.

Lung Saskatchewan works with a variety of communities in Saskatchewan and across Canada, investing in research, advocating for changes to protect lung health, and providing education and support to patients, caregivers, and health care professionals.

YOUTH ADVOCACY EVENT

Youth4Change groups and health partners stormed the Saskatchewan Legislature on May 16th to advocate for regulatory measures to protect youth from vaping.

Tobacco continues to be the number one cause of preventable disease and death, killing almost eight million people worldwide, including 48,000 people in Canada every year. In Saskatchewan, that equates to 1,500 deaths per year (18% of all yearly deaths).

Youth4Change has eight recommendations for the government to reduce the impact of tobacco and vaping use on our healthcare system, economy, and our people.

Thank you to Health Minister, Hon. Paul Merriman, members of the Legislative Assembly, our health partners, the Youth4Change groups, and everyone who came to support the rally.

The SHRF 2022-2023 Solutions Program Recipients Announced

Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation has announced the recipients of the 2022-2023 Solutions Program - including the recipients of the Lung Health Focus Area funding to support groundbreaking research that improves the management of lung diseases and enhances quality of life for those affected.
