NEW SHA RESPIRATORY SUPPORT REFERRAL
 

The SHA is transitioning to a new Respiratory Support Referral which should be launched fully in Saskatchewan in early 2026. The referral form is continually being revised as needed and a new version will be available soon. 

Lung Sask will continue to use any forms submitted for home oxygen testing but is encouraging everyone to transition to this form as the new versions become available. The form is live here and will be updated as the revisions are made.

Optimised oxygenation improves functional capacity during daily activities in patients with COPD on long-term oxygen therapy

This small study showed that the capacity to perform activities of daily living (ADL) improved in patients with COPD on long-term oxygen therapy when optimizing oxygenation. Correspondingly, the patients reported less dyspnea.

The use of automated oxygen titration during the ADL test increased time spent within a target saturation of 90–94% compared with the use of a fixed oxygen flow. However, it required more than three times as high an oxygen flow, which on average was 5.4 L/min in the adjusted flow arm compared with 1.6 L/min in the fixed flow arm.

This enforces the importance of titrating flow based on demand. We should start to think of this more when doing oxygen testing and reporting to providers.

Edits have been made to the Home Oxygen Tester Handbook and include updates for oxygen companies, nocturnal oxygen calculations and a few other minor changes.

Please replace your existing Home Oxygen Tester Handbook with this current version.

Updates were also made on the Rural Home Oxygen Referral Form, nocturnal oximetry forms, and the Home Oxygen in Saskatchewan brochure.
