This September has us enjoying hot days and cool nights. At Lung Saskatchewan, we have many exciting things happening in the coming months.

Every September, emergency rooms across Canada see a spike in admissions for children with asthma a few weeks after children head back to school.  Did you know we have a video you can share with your child's teacher about what they need to know about your child's asthma? In addition, we recently hosted an amazing webinar about the asthma surge that happens every September when children return to school. Watch the recording of Dr. Mary Noseworthy, a prominent Calgary-based pediatric respirologist, as she shares with us targeted learnings around pediatric asthma management during back-to-school season. 

Speaking of September, this also means it is time for our fall Breathe & Win raffle! We have so many different experiences to be won! Legislation Created to Keep Nicotine Pouches out of Kids' Hands
Federal Government Implements New Regulations to Protect Canadian Youth from Nicotine Pouches

Youth4Change applauds the federal government for taking action to protect Canadian youth by implementing new legislation on nicotine pouches. Effective August 28th, 2024, the sale of Zonnic nicotine pouches will be banned in all convenience stores and gas stations across Canada.

Of the three flavours, Berry Frost and Tropic Breeze will be fully recalled, while the Cool Mint flavour will only be available for purchase behind the counter at pharmacies as a Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT).

Congratulations to all the participants of Lung Saskatchewan's 2023-2024 Saskatchewan Quits Smoking Challenge. We are pleased to share key results and successes of the challenge.  
  
Highlights included: 
- 563 participants taking part from over 170 communities across the province.  
- 71% of participants reported achieving their goal of learning more, cutting back on smoking, or quitting smoking altogether.  
- 42 participants reported that they were successfully able to quit smoking!

kNOw Vaping Resources for students
Calling all Teachers!

Are you a teacher that teaches between the grades of 4-9? With support from the Government of Saskatchewan’s Ministries of Health and Education and in collaboration with Saskatchewan youth and educators, Lung Sask has developed vaping resources for Grades 4-6 and 7-9 classrooms. Youth vape rates continue to rise at an alarming rate, which is why it is becoming increasingly important to educate students in our province on this issue.

I started smoking when I was just 16, back in the 1970s. Growing up on a farm, I didn’t think much about it—my mom and stepdad smoked, so it seemed normal. For years, I brushed off the warnings from doctors, friends, and family. It wasn’t until December 2019 that my world was shaken. It was confirmed it was stage three small cell lung cancer—a particularly aggressive form that often recurs, especially in the brain.

Our Lung Helpline is a free, confidential lung information service, managed by Certified Respiratory Educators. 

Educators are available to answer your questions about breathing and lung diseases Monday - Friday from 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM.
