Why is it prescribed?

Nystatin is used to treat many fungal infections. This material will be limited to the treatment of candidiasis (yeast) infections of the mouth, throat and esophagus (food pipe).

PMS-Nystatin oral suspension is meant to be taken by mouth at regular intervals.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed and it is almost time for your next dose, do not double the dose (unless you have been told to do so).
It is important to continue taking the medication until finished, even if signs or symptoms of the infection disappear before the prescription is completely finished this will ensure the infection is completely gone and prevent recurrence.

Shake the container well before each use.  Store at room temperature.
Each bottle should come with it's own calibrated measuring device (a dropper). Try to swish each dose thoroughly (for as long as possible) in the mouth before swallowing and do not eat or drink anything for 20 to 30 minutes afterward. This will help increase the contact time of the medication with the infected area. When treating a young child or infant, try to "paint" the medication over the inside of the mouth and allow them to swallow as usual.

Depending on the length of treatment, you may be given 2 or more bottles of PMS-Nystatin suspension.

Mothers of breastfed infants should use nursing pads to stop transfer of organism to clothing. These should be washed frequently with bleach or disposable nursing pads should be used.

Dentures should be disinfected daily (e.g. with chlorhexidine).

Toothbrushes should be replaced often until infection clears up.

Nystatin is an antifungal agent. It works by interfering with the formation of the fungal cell membrane. This allows the contents of the cell to leak out, resulting in fungal cell death.

Along with its needed effects, nystatin may cause some unwanted or undesirable effects. Generally, nystatin is well tolerated and many people will not experience unwanted effects. The frequency and severity of these effects is dependant on many factors including dose, duration of therapy and individual susceptibility.

Possible unwanted effects include:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • stomach ache

Nystatin should be taken exactly as prescribed. Continue taking the medication until it is finished.
You may be told to continue taking nystatin for 2 days after the symptoms have disappeared to ensure complete eradication of the fungal infection.
