Two articles in this month’s newsletter are related to sleep apnea.  A better name for sleep apnea is sleep suffocation because people with this disease are being repeatedly suffocated while they try to sleep. When a sleeping person can’t breathe, the brain is aroused from sleep and breathing is re-started. Sleeping resumes, but only until the next suffocation occurs, often within a minute or two. The person does not wake up completely and does not remember being suffocated or awakened. The consequences of the lost sleep are associated with many adverse physical and mental conditions.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea linked to Development of Diabetes

A large Canadian study from the University of Toronto has found that people with moderate sleep apnea have a 23% increased risk of developing diabetes.  Those with severe sleep apnea had an even greater (30%) risk of developing diabetes. Treating sleep apnea should include more than just a CPAP machine – a healthy lifestyle including exercise and proper diet must go hand in hand with medical treatment.

Stamp Out Asthma Raffle

Mike and Sheri Olain are the ambassadors of this year’s Stamp Out Asthma Raffle.  They contacted The Lung Association because they tragically lost their wonderful son, Emerson, in December 2013 from an asthma attack. Emerson would have turned three in January.  They are courageously sharing Emerson’s story with the hope that some good can come out of their terrible loss and that it never happens to another child.  Asthma is a common but serious lung disease.  Learn more about the Lung Association's asthma programs and services. The Lung Association and Roughrider Scott McHenry Celebrate Tobacco-Free Youth!

On May 22, 2014, The Lung Association went on a road trip with Saskatchewan Roughrider Scott McHenry to celebrate two Tobacco-Free Graduation classes! Why was this important to us? Because for ten years in a row, Saskatchewan has had the highest youth and young adult smoking rates in Canada.

We visited the schools of Star City and Choiceland, SK. Scott did a presentation to multiple grades on youth being champions of their own health and then followed it up with questions from the youth. (of course questions were asked about the Grey Cup!) After that portion, he took time to autograph items and take pictures with the graduating students. It was a fun time had by all. The Lung Association is extremely grateful to Scott McHenry for his time and dedication to lung health. He challenged the younger kids to follow in the footsteps of the tobacco-free graduating classes and we agree! Let’s support Saskatchewan’s youth to choose health for life!
