Universal Coverage for CPAP Cut in Saskatchewan

The following program change was announced during the March 22nd Saskatchewan Budget Speech.

"As of October 1, 2017, coverage for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) flow generators will no longer be universally covered in Saskatchewan."

Sleep Apnea is a common disorder in which you stop breathing while you sleep. If you or any of your loved ones have sleep apnea, you may be affected by this program change.

The Great Canadian Sleepwalk

On Friday the 13th of October, join a team of 'sleepwalkers' in a 5km walk to raise awareness about healthy sleep and raise funds for the Canadian Sleep Society (CSS) and The Lung Association, Saskatchewan (LAS).

This year's campaign shines a light on people living with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease). Across Canada today, an estimated 800,000 Canadians live with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Many COPD patients do not have access to diagnostic tools and management programs that are the recognized clinical standard of care. A lung attack (which is a flare-up of COPD) is as deadly as a heart attack. Although COPD affects both men and women alike, it has become a crucial women’s health issue. COPD kills more Canadian women than breast cancer. Currently, there are approximately 64,000 Saskatchewan people living with COPD and almost half of that are women.

This year proceeds from the Breathe & Win raffle will go towards COPD scientific research, improved diagnostics, improved treatment and education for our health care professionals and the public.

Protecting the Health of our Community with Smoke-Free Outdoor Spaces

Earlier this summer, Regina implemented one of the strictest outdoor smoking bylaws in the country. In doing so it joins a long list of Canadian municipalities protecting residents from the harms of second-hand smoke, including some here in Saskatchewan (Saskatoon, Warman, Martensville and Maidstone).

As a result, smoking and the use of electronic cigarettes are banned on outdoor patios of restaurants and bars, all municipal properties including parks, playgrounds, sports fields, on golf courses and any municipal property where the public gathers. This is something all Saskatchewan residents can be proud of, as our province has one of the highest smoking rates in the country and we need to take decisive action to start saving lives and protecting the health of our people.
