{contact.email_greeting},

One of the key elements required for a charitable organisation to be successful is a well-functioning volunteer Board of Directors. The men and women who serve on these boards give freely of their time and talents to fulfill a very important governance and stewardship role. The Lung Association of Saskatchewan is truly fortunate to have a very collegial group of dedicated, skilled volunteers serving on its Board, who believe passionately in the cause.

At our Annual General Meeting in April, three new people joined the Board, bringing new skill sets to complement the existing array of expertise on the Board. We welcome Peter Dodson, Patrick Ennis and James Froh. A complete list of the Board membership can be found on our website. If you recognise any of them, send them a thank-you message for their service to the improvement of lung health or address it to info@sk.lung.ca and we’ll pass it along.

For those of you who weren’t able to attend our Annual General Meeting in April, our Annual Report for 2015 and our 2015 audited financial statements are also available on our website under the About Us section.

World Asthma Day

Today is World Asthma Day. Is your asthma under control?

Spring has arrived and it can be a beautiful, exciting time, but it also brings pollen, dust, snow mold and other common asthma triggers with it proving to be problematic to many. Asthma is a long-term (chronic) lung disease that can limit people’s activity levels, reduce their quality of life, can increase their likelihood of being admitted in the hospital, and in rare cases cause death, especially if it is not well-managed. It is common and affects almost 2 million Canadians. Research has found 1 in 5 people with asthma are not well controlled which can have a negative impact on quality of life and overall health.

Take this 30 second asthma test and find out if your asthma is under control.

Meet Trent Litzenberger!

What is your education background?
I am a Certified Respiratory Educator and a physical therapist by profession.

What is your job title and years of service?
I have worked for The Lung Association part-time for the past 12 years, but recently joined the organization full-time. I am the Vice-President of Professional Education, a role I share with Jan Neumann. Most recently, I worked with the Saskatoon Health Region as the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Coordinator.

What is your special interest with The Lung Association?
Working in professional education for the organization is an exciting opportunity to provide the kind of support people and health care professionals need to better understand how to manage lung disease. Whether I am writing content for courses for lung disease or teaching people or health care professionals about lung disease, I am passionate about helping people breathe easier.

What is your claim to fame?
Trent is 1 of 10 National Trainers for Group Fitness for GoodLife Fitness Clubs of Canada. If not helping people breathe easier, he can be found making people breathe harder!

Important Change for Planned Gifts

Up until January 1, 2016 trusts created in your will, called testamentary trusts, had a distinct advantage as earnings in the trust were taxed at graduated rates. Starting January 2016, testamentary trusts are taxed at the top rate of taxation. There are still good reasons to use testamentary trusts in your estate planning but reducing the tax paid by a trust is no longer one of them. For more details please see this article.

If you would like more information on the benefits of planned gifts please contact us at 1-888-566-5864 or info@sk.lung.ca.
