Quitting smoking is the best thing an individual can do to reduce their chances of developing lung disease or to manage existing lung disease. This panel discussion will provide expertise with backgrounds in tobacco education, respirology, and addictions counselling.

Panelists

Dr. Erika Penz is an Associate Professor in the Division of Respirology, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the  University of Saskatchewan and Program Director for the Respirology Training Program. She has a particular interest in smoking cessation and the interaction of vaping and smoking among youth and is co-founder and co-facilitator of Youth4Change, an education and advocacy youth group aimed at protecting children and youth from the harms of vaping. She is a proud mother of two daughters ages 13 and 15; and a busy owner of two Labrador Retrievers, Theo and Sully, whom she hopes to train as therapy dogs in the future.
Cory Gambler works with the File Hills Qu’Appelle Tribal Council which is situated on treaty four territory. For the first 10 years with FHQTC he worked at a treatment center for first Nations Youth hat have had addictions affect their lives. Now for the past three years, he has worked with FHQ Health Services. FHQ provides services to 11 first nations communities. Since being at FHQ Health Services he has been in charge of running a tobacco cessation program. The program looks at helping people to cut down and or quit smoking, by the use of NRT’s or quit smoking challenges, also, with cultural teachings from elders in the communities.
Lynn MacKinnon is one of the 467 CTEs in Canada who to date have qualified as a Certified Tobacco Educator through the Canadian Network for Respiratory Care. She has completed the following specialty courses through the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health TEACH Program: Comprehensive Course on Tobacco Cessation; Integrated Chronic Disease Management; and Tobacco Interventions for Clients with Mental Health and/or Substance Use Disorder.
